Technically cause should be because, since it doesn't set off the meter and is the proper word.
I'm unfamiliar with the idiom of death-pulling strings, but that's likely cultural and the only other thing that caused me to flinch in the poem. Elsewise it flows well and has a delicious macabre to it.
